Nasty! - The otherside of keeping "Hots"
I think any forum that promotes venomous animals, should on balance, illustrate the possible outcomes of an accident. The above pic is of an Eastern Rattlesnake bite. You can imagine this would have been rather tender! And a near death experience is possibly a good outcome! Many victims of venomous snake bites dont survive at all!
The keeping of venomous is not something that should be considered lightly, and requires a good deal of experience.
That said, with carefully structured planning and training, it can be a very rewarding sector to be involved in.

We must never forget or under estimate how powerful these toxins are, and that is part of safe working procedure.
But there comes a time in many a reptile keepers life, that venomous fills a void that other species dont quite match.
It doesnt have to be all about being chased around the reptile room by a rabid Black Mamba, there's many small interesting species that make excellent subjects eg: small Bothrop sp., Atheris, and some Trimeresurus sp..

You just know that's going to leave a mark.
All though i have had a fascination with hots for many years i would never consider
keeping them.I would be forever worried that some one would get tagged and i couldn't live with that.

My accountant: Ken Welch, used to work at a snake farm in Sweden during the early part of the 1970's. He was snagged in a vein, on his hand by a very large Puff that jack kniffed on him as he was putting it back in it's enclosure. He immediately self administered several ampoules of antivenin (!!NOT RECOMMENDED!!), and got rushed to hospital. He slipped into a coma enroute, and died twice in the ER. He remained in a coma for many weeks, and awoke to find himself in a hospital bed with a "tent" over to help sanitise the fascioctomy (an incision from his chest, down his arm to his hand, to releave the swelling) they had given him. To this day, he still has the scars. Didnt put him off though!!!!!
