Default Venom Reserve Question

just been watching a programme on spitting cobras and the snake is repeatedly spitting venom out over and over again, do they have reserves or can they produce venom quickly enough to spit again soon after a previous spit? is this different with other DWA species?

Spitting Cobra do produce a high yield of venom. But the venom serves two purposes; one is to kill prey, and the other is to act as a defence mechanism, and that is where the ability to "spit" comes in. Venomous snakes would rather flee than bite as a defense. Biting puts them in close proximity to their attacker, which puts them at risk, and wastes venom. Once the venom has been spent, it takes a while for the venom sacks to fill back up.

This is the upside of the downside of working with Spitting Cobras, as although the "spitting" is an extra hazzard, there is a possibility that if you do get bitten, the yield of the bite may be relatively low or even a dry bite if your really lucky.

It is noteworthy that the African Spitters are the more evolved and efficient at "spitting", the Asian Spitters are less evolved and effective.

Consider also that sometimes on these natural history programs, they use more than one animal and make it look like one continous shot.
