The Ultimate Crocodile
I watched this programme this morning on one of the discovery channels and it really was fascinating.
It was all about Nile Crocodiles, about when they lay their eggs, the predators they have to protect their hatchlings from etc...
The one thing with crocs that has always fascinated me is how when they're courting, the male will vibrate muscles in his chest sending like a shockwave of ripples across the water, and when they do it to warn other males, how its that vigorous the water dances up and down on their backs. I could watch that for hours.
I did nearly end up crying throughout the programme though, at one point the female had gone down to the water away from laying site, realised something was wrong and when she returned a monitor had dug the eggs up, smashed half of them, and yes i know its a croc, but god...the look in her eyes was heartbreaking, and they were saying how she would now have to wait till the following year to breed again.
Another part, the eggs were hatching, and as they were she was collecting the baby crocs in her jaw and carrying them down to the water, and as she took some of the babies down, the monitor came back, ran off with one of the hatchlings hanging from its mouth..... and it was calling for its mom.
How i didn't cry i don't know, and i know its nature.... but still it was so sad =[
