It's not a rumour as such but the best ones I have heard are along the lines of

"What sort of lizard is that?" - pointing to a snake

"Which of those snakes can I pul the tail off and it'll regrow?"

Or from the guy who used "finders keepers" on my missing carpet python "It doesn't eat mice, it eats bugs and worms."

Not heard that many rumours though. Lots of outright lies eg. bearded dragons grow their tails back, but not many rumours :(
