Default Advice

Sadly i lost my nine week old dragon early hours this morning.

He would open his mouth wide then start fitting then collapse and be lifeless. ( i thought he was dead a few times) after holding him in my warm hands he would jump back to life . this happened 3 times and on the 3rd he didnt come back round.

I have read alot of the same problem happening to all ages of beardies in the same order i described.

Anyone know the cause of this so we can avoid it at all costs as its not very nice seeing them like it and it certainly isnt nice for the beardie.

I know 100% its not overheating as some people say as i have 2 thermometers and a thermostat and they are monitored literally all day .

Any info would be great.

Hi Aaron,

Thats sad to hear.

Sounds like some form of seizure occurance witch could be related to many factors including; head injury, intoxication (inculding antibiotic drug overdose or withdraw), bacterial infection, metabolic disturbances including hypocalcemia (leading to MBD), or hypoglycaemia, space-occupying lesions in the brain (abscesses, tumors) etc.

without a post mortem being carried out no one can say for sure.

But lets look at hypocalcemia as a suggestion, please tell us details of your set up including UV source, and your feeding and supplementation regimes. Please give as much details as possible.

Thanks

Ty

Hi Ty

We have a 4 x 2 x 2 viv. I have a sun glo 100 watt as the basking light and a reptiglo 10.0 uv tube. The uv tube was screwed to the top of the tank (as advised by the pet shop) I have now found out by tom its useless at the top and he wouldnt of got any uv the whole time we had him 4 Weeks so that is now alot lower. ( useless as we didnt have anything high in the viv).

We fed him crickets every day but since we got him he wouldnt eat over 5 in a day. He would not eat greens no matter how much we would encourage it. As advised by the pet shop one day we would use calcium powder the next nutrabol then calcium then nutrabol etc etc.

We went to the shop we got him from yesterday and the same tank he was from had his siblings in 3 of which were dead in the tank maybe the whole batch from day one was doomed. including our ralph.

Hi,

From what you have said the problem is probably throught the clutch. This could well suggest hypocalcamia throughout the entire clutch, possibly in part right back to the parents if they were poorly maintained. Deficient babies are difficult if not impossible to pull round, so dont be hard on yourself.

You mention "We went to the shop we got him from yesterday and the same tank he was from had his siblings in 3 of which were dead "

Can i suggest you change shops to purchase from in future, dont no how far you are from Rob at Scales and Fangs, Leigh On Sea, but you'd be better off making the journey, and buying solid stock from a reputable source.

All the best,

Ty
