That is exactly the case, I have had 1 little leatherback pop up from god knows where this year, but havent had 1 before. All I can guess is that my newest male dragon has some co-dom leather gene, and my old female seems to be pretty smooth. I have had a few hatchlings that look smoother than their siblings but 1 which was full on, and that clutch came from said new male and my older female. Also, this is how any genetic trait can be created, the hypo pastels that I have bred were purely accident, lol, when I had my first trio of dragons I didnt even know how to sex them or anything. Well after 6 months we seen them fighting and seperated them, keeping 1 male with pebs( the old female) so of course, 2 months later Pebs becomes a proud mother of 21 eggs, and when they hatch, 5 of them are pure white with clear nails. After getting a few more dragons, including Ruby, a blood female , I noticed that Pebs nails have only a thin vein of black present, and red( the hypo babies daddy) has very pale beige veins in his nails, compared to Rubys nails which are solid black in colour, a subtle difference, but i spose it makes a lot of difference with the offspring. So that was how we came to have lots of little hypo's hatching out!
Awesome and interesting stuff! Im not very good with genetics and selective breeding andall that, but I do find it fascinating!!
