As for Sand Boas, you will find that these snake can tolerate a hell of alot of heat. I keep my hot end at around 95 degrees.

There is a difference between 'Must be available' and 'Optional Addition required' a Heat Light or a UV isn't a 'Must be.' it is an 'Optional Addition required' So they are in good mood with only heat mats, But as more heat sources are better unless its way to much, These are equatorial animals that require high temp (Babies do not need heatlight nor UV at all), So if you add more heat sources its much better for them, still they are in good temp with only requiring a heat mat,,,
Sorry to argue but i disagree about the plastic preventing the heat, Heat mats are used 12 hours, (or maybe even 24 hrs) a day, So that heat mat would deff cause mold to the plastic, atleast just a little bit of the first layer, and it could cause belly burn i have heard alot of burrowing snakes getting belly burns from heatmats not preventing, Wooden and glass vivs prevent heat but not alot with plastic. (Even if the plastic is powerful enough to prevent heat, it is not powerful enough to prevent from snake when it reaches the 'plastic tub's ground').
I know alot of Experienced keepers use heatlights for KSB's unless they're using racking systems.
Note: I dont say i am more experienced than you Gazza but i am tipping on what i know from experienced people and what they use.
