Default Tarantula Scientific and Common Names List

Loads on people on here use thew common name for spiders. It's fine when talking about a Chile Rose (well, it is nowadays) or a Red Knee but after that people start getting confused.
To use an example I often quote, at one point if you asked for a Chile Rose you could reasonably assume you'd get either G.spatulata, G. cala or P. auratus.
All looked the same to some extent and all were called Chile rose.
cala also went as Chile Beautiful and auratus also went as Chile Yellow Rump.
The spatulata and cala are now both called G. rosea, with the cala being the red colour form. Some shops are now selling these as Fire Tarantulas.

You can see how confusing this can get.

Why not have a go at using the scientific names?
After all, you buy a spider, you have to learn that it's a Cobalt Blue or whatever so while you are at it why not learn that it is a Haplopelma lividum?
99% of the time this can be cut down to H. lividum. Not too hard really is it?
It's always best to buy a spider using the scientific name so you know exactly what you should be getting. Ok, some pet shops dont care what it is so long as you give them the money but I guarentee you can get the same spider from online, usually from this site for a damn sight cheaper and from someone who knows what it's requirements are.
If you are planning any future breeding of the new spider then there is a real chance you will be knackered without the scientific name.

Go on, make it a point to learn the scientific names of all the spiders you own. Then, try to learn the ones you want next. You'll be surprised how easily you will pick them up and what's more, when you are talking about your favorite spider everyone will know exactly what you are on about.
