i used to scared real silly of spiders- but i found them fascinating, i mean i liked them but they terrified me. & i know why- as a kid i used to catch & keep them in jamjars (wasn't yet scared then!) my dad, who didn't like them himself, said 'son, i wish you wouldn't catch spiders- they bite, you know that?' from then on i was scared of spiders to the point of paranoia! i became more scared of them than my dad was, so one day i decided to put a stop to it- i reasoned that if i kept a huge, hairy, scary-looking spider that wouldn't bite, in a tank, where it couldn't appear near me out of the blue, maybe i'd get used to it, & then spiders in general. so i bought a pink toe. one day i decided to try letting it walk on my hand. it didn't bite me, so i did it a few more times. then i got a chile rose, & repeated the experiment. these can sometimes bite, so if it didn't, that would help vanquish my fear. again it proved a walk in the park, so to speak. then i tried an aggressive species- one i knew i could never handle, just to see if i'd be scared of a spider that bites- the original cause of my fear! so i got a real nasty one- a golden starbust baboon spider! although i was nervous of it, even though i never tried to touch it, i felt nothing like the old paranoid dread of before, so my collection grew, & my fear diminished, with one notable exception- i still don't like house spiders, & won't tolerate them in my house. but, whereas before, i wouldn't go near one, i now have the courage to put a jar over them, slide a piece of paper underneath, & throw them outside. couldn't do that before!

I'd love to get over my fear of spiders. Am meant to be going to visit a friends 2 new T's (yes you, Janet) as she helped me with my fear of snakes...still not sure about ones that can kill me but I'm getting there. Not sure if spiders is going to be as easy though.
My hubby used to have a Sydney Funnel Web living in his car (he's from Sydney obviously) and didn't have a problem with it.....I just want to die when I think about it and know I would if I ever came face to face with one. I just about managed being close to a redback (outdoors) and they're tiny!

I think its similar stories all round. bought my first chillie rose years back thinking it would help. Took me weeks to finally hold him and after that it was a walk in the park. I got hooked on T's the behavior, colours and all the shapes and sizes. i advise anyone thats local to pop into to scales and fangs and either trish, rob or me can show you that there not as bad as alot of people think.

when i was a kid i used to have a phobia of slugs, sounds strange but traces back to when i was little girl when on holiday my older sister was telling me that some where chasing us, so for years after into my teenage years i was freaked out by slugs, but i dont mind them now.
