do you mean a redfoot tortoise?
They eat carrion (dead animals) and fruit as well as the usual vegetation. However, I have never heard of feeding them chicks. Firstly, chicks have little to no nutritional value, secondly; there's a lot of bone which isn't reccomended.
I used to fed a couple of mealworms once a week or so - or the odd worm maybe.
in the wild they eat whatever they can find on the very competitive forest floor and hence have evolved to digest carrion and rotten fruits. I used to feed mine about 75% weeds, 20% fruit and 5% meat.
That's all presuming you mean a red footed tortoise and not a red eared slider lol
