Question Cuttle Fish..

im a little confussed...
my tort has had a cuttle fish in her set-up for as long as i have had her, but having never seen her use it, i though "maybe its old, il buy a new one"..

well today i did..

and she has gone mad for it..
like crazy!...

so can they go "stale" or off?.. or do they just like the fresh soft stuff?..
if so, should cuttle fish be "replaced" after an amount of time?..
ive never read about it, but i find it rather intresting, and it would be a nice addition to add to a caresheet.

Cuttlefish can go nasty if it's exposed to moisture, whether it be from a water bowl or from spraying. Your tort may have accidentally walked water over it at some point, and from that point on decided it was no good.

Unless it's a tropical species, then it may have been exposed to water whilst spraying the vivarium.

Some cuttlefish can have a very strong smell of fish, this sometimes puts them off.
Some people 'weather' their cuttlefish, by leaving it outside rain or shine, this gets rid of some of the fishy smell

I don't know about the use of cuttle fish with the reps, but I used to breed parrots and parrakeets I was always changing it as it gets very tough for them to grind up. One of my pattagonian (sp) Conures whent mad for it But it had to be fresh..

hi i use cuttlebone with my tortoises and although i have often heard it needs to be weathered and they only like it when it is old and weathered.i havent found this to be the case.i collect mine directly from the beach then just run it under the tap before placing it in the table.they go mad for it for the first few days then only have a nibble on occassion after that.
